Reflecting on my experience as an international student in China fills me with gratitude. I am Ayoub Bechrouri, a Moroccan scholar who came to Beijing in 2018. My mission was to learn, grow, and immerse myself in a vibrant culture. Studying at Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) offered opportunities for language mastery, cultural exploration, and personal growth.
Cultural Immersion and Academic Excellence
China’s rich history, traditions, and technological advancements fascinated me from the start. I mastered Mandarin, explored cultural heritage, and engaged in innovative research. Honors like the International Outstanding Student Scholarship and HSK 5 certificate recognized my dedication. A scholarship from Beijing Sport University enabled me to explore sports coaching and mentoring.
Values That Shaped My Experience
Discipline, integrity, and perseverance guide my life. Living in China helped me strengthen these values. The warmth and hospitality of Chinese people enhanced my personal growth. Traveling to Inner Mongolia, Chang Bai Shan, and the Huang He River offered breathtaking views and deepened my appreciation of China’s diversity.
Modern Living and Technological Convenience
Life in Beijing is highly convenient. Technology integration allows easy ordering of food, tickets, and daily services. This seamless lifestyle made my stay enjoyable and efficient.
Exploring China’s Social Media
The social media landscape in China differs from home. WhatsApp and Instagram are restricted, but Bili Bili, Weibo, and Xiao Hong Shu provide unique learning opportunities. WeChat became an essential tool for communication and daily life.
Respect for Diversity and Faith

As a Muslim and African, I initially worried about cultural integration. China values diversity and encourages peaceful religious practice. Attending Friday prayers and connecting with Chinese Muslims enriched my experience. Visits to historical sites like the Confucius Temple deepened my understanding of Chinese philosophy and traditions.
Volunteering and Sports Coaching
Volunteering as a sports coach in soccer and American football allowed me to connect with locals. Chinese children are curious, energetic, and enthusiastic. Coaching them provided inspiration, joy, and community engagement.
Resilience During COVID-19
China’s response to the pandemic was remarkable. The idiom 同舟共济 (tóng zhōu gòng jì)—working together toward a common goal—showcased societal unity. People supported each other and followed guidelines, demonstrating resilience and cohesion.
Sharing My Journey
My experiences in China influenced family and friends back home. Through stories, photos, and videos, they learned about Chinese culture, art, music, and cuisine. Many expressed a desire to visit China, inspired by my journey.
Lessons Learned and Personal Growth
Life in China taught me patience, adaptability, and cultural sensitivity. I gained new perspectives on society, self-development, and global interconnectedness. The Chinese idiom 学无止境 (xué wú zhǐ jìng)—learning knows no bounds—reminds me that growth is limitless.
Conclusion: A Home Away from Home

China gave me more than education; it provided inspiration, growth, and a sense of belonging. The kindness, hospitality, and wisdom I experienced will remain with me. My journey continues, and I look forward to contributing to this dynamic society.
