UK Journey with life experience, New friends all around the world

My Nottingham Journey: Independence, Education, and Global Friends

It still feels surreal! I’m jane, and I’m finally studying my Master’s in Management and Finance at Nottingham Trent University (NTU)—a dream I’ve held since childhood. The UK, a global financial center, is the perfect place for my one-year program.

Why I Chose NTU

My decision was strategic. Beyond the UK’s renowned academic reputation, NTU stood out. It’s centrally located, offers excellent facilities, and boasts high employability—a huge benefit for my future career. A UK degree is a critical investment that will significantly increase my job prospects and professional skills back home in Indonesia.

🚀 Life Beyond the Books

The initial shock of being away from family quickly turned into an exciting journey of self-discovery. That first week was all about learning independence: doing my own laundry, cooking meals, and exploring Nottingham.

Now, my favorite part is the people! I’ve taken French and Japanese classes and joined the Japanese Society, meeting friends from all corners of the world. We hang out and travel to other cities every week, turning student life into a memorable adventure.

Adapting to the Academic Environment

I was nervous about the new learning style, but I didn’t need to be! NTU’s lecturers are incredibly helpful and patient. The learning environment, though advanced, is completely manageable.

The most fascinating aspect has been diversity. Experiencing it firsthand has been eye-opening. I feel immense pride when my international classmates show genuine interest in visiting my home country, Indonesia!

💡 Budgeting Like a Master’s Student

The staggering price difference between the UK and Indonesia was a challenge I quickly learned to tackle. Since I do everything myself, from groceries to socialising, costs can add up. My solution? Home cooking! Now, friend gatherings often turn into fun cooking sessions where we take turns making meals—a delicious and cost-effective way to hang out!

My journey here is more than just a degree; it’s a lesson in independence, a cultural exchange, and the best investment I could make in my future.

Since you mentioned you love to travel and you are currently studying Management and Finance at NTU, how about I look up some interesting, budget-friendly day trips or weekend getaway options from Nottingham that might appeal to a student interested in finance or history?

  • Journey: Short, direct train journey (approx. 25-35 minutes).
  • Significance for Finance/Management: Leicester was once one of the wealthiest cities in Europe.

You can also visit the King Richard III Visitor Centre to delve into the history of the medieval monarchy, which played a huge role in early national finance.
    • Budget Tip: Strolling the Golden Mile and soaking in the atmosphere is free, and you can find many delicious and inexpensive street food options.
